Greater New Salem Missionary Baptist Church has a rich history in South Los Angeles for over 50 years.
Greater New Salem is currently under the leadership of Dr. Richard N. Askew, Senior Pastor. Pastor Askew grew up at Greater New Salem and his parents were Charter Members of the church. He was called to preach at an early age. He answered the call and preached his first sermon on May 22, 1995. He was ordained by the late Rev. Vester B. Griffith.
Greater New Salem was the vision of Rev. Vester B. Griffith. As a young man in the Navy, V.B. Griffith's life was changed forever when he accepted Christ. He had a burning desire to teach God’s word, a zeal for evangelism, to witness, and to make a difference in our world. On November 23, 1961, a group of people gathered together in the home of Rev. & Sis. Griffith to organize the church. The church moved several times before finding a permanent home. In early 1964, ground breaking began at the current location, and in April 1965, the church moved into the newly built edifice at 9524 S. San Pedro, Los Angeles, California.
The torch was passed to Dr. Richard N. Askew in 2000 who became the second pastor of Greater New Salem. He was interim pastor from 2000 – 2001 and became Senior Pastor in May 2001. In 2013, Rev. Charles Turner, Jr. was promoted to Assistant Pastor. He previously served as Youth Pastor for several years.
